Traffic Course FAQs

What should I bring?

Bring your photo ID/Drivers Licence, your Class 6/8 Learners Licence and all your riding gear. For cold and rainy days, please dress appropriately and bring rain gear if you have it.

Dressing in layers is always a good idea to remain comfortable. Bring money for coffee and lunch stops. A small water bottle is also a good idea.

What happens if I drop or damage the motorcycle?

VISC will not charge students for any accidental damage to our motorcycles. Drops can happen; better it happen on our bike than yours!

However, any damage resulting from intentional misuse will be charged to the student.

Can I use my own motorcycle?

No. For insurance and liability reasons, all Traffic Skills Course students will use VISC supplied motorcycles. Students will be assigned a motorcycle by their traffic instructor.

Can I wear a backpack to bring extra items?

No. For safety reasons we do not want students wearing backpacks while riding. Our instructors can take a few small items like water bottles, wallets and sometimes extra clothing with them on their motorcycles.

Can I just take the Traffic Skills Course?

No. Our Novice Skills Course is a prerequisite to taking our Traffic Skills Course. This is done so our instructors know that students have a basic fundamental skill base and confident operation of a motorcycle before heading out into traffic.

Use of VISC traffic bikes for ICBC Road Tests

Students who successfully complete our Traffic Skills Course have the option of using the bike they rode in the traffic course for their ICBC Road Test at no charge.

NOTE: Use of motorcycle will depend on availability for the day booked. We do our best to avoid double booking motorcycles on test days, but occasionally it does happen, as well as a bike may be out of service for mechanical repairs. If this happens, we will do our best to subsite a bike of the same make and model.

What if I took the Novice course several months ago or the previous year?

Students who have previously completed our Novice Skills Course may register for the Traffic course, however if it has been more than 3 months since completing your Novice Skills Course, you will be required to re-ride an MST* with VISC prior to taking your Traffic Skills Course. This is to demonstrate to VISC instructors that you have retained and still possess the required basic motorcycle handling skills needed to ride in traffic.

Pre-traffic Extra Training* sessions can also be requested in order to provide students with a quick skills refresher before heading out into traffic. These can be beneficial if you haven’t been riding since taking your Novice Skills Course.

* additional fees apply
