Let’s talk about Extra Training

Everyone learns at a different pace and not everyone will require or need Extra Training*, however it is available for students who may discover that learning to ride a motorcycle is more challenging than they initially anticipated. We at VISC pride ourselves on teaching our students to be safe, confident and proficient riders. In order to achieve this, a certain level of riding criteria must be achieved in order for students to progress and successfully complete their Novice Skills Course. Even though VISC’s Novice Skills Course offers the most riding time (16hrs) for beginner motorcycling courses in all of BC, there are instances where a student may still require additional instruction and riding in order to meet VISC riding standards required to successfully complete your course.

Students are required to achieve a passing grade to complete the Novice Skills Course. Students must safety and adequately demonstrate one riding skill set before advancing onto the next, as well as achieve a minimum level of “Acceptable” in all areas of course riding to successfully complete/pass this course.

If a student cannot meet our minimum riding standards, then that student may not be permitted to continue with their course. Reasons requiring Extra Training sessions may include:

  • Not demonstrating safe riding

  • Posing a danger to themselves or others

  • Riding skills are not at minimum level of “Acceptable”

  • Riding exercises are marked “Incomplete” or “Needs Improvement

  • Lack of strength or stamina to operate the motorcycle safely and correct

We at VISC will always do our best to work with each and every student in order to achieve success in all of our courses, however we are limited in our ability to provide extra training outside of our scheduled course dates & allotted times. Restrictions such as training tarmac, instructor and a student’s availability often make it very challenging to get an Extra Training session completed before the next course session.

*Additional fees apply. Extra Training session(s) are NOT included with your Novice Skills Course registration. More than one Extra Training session may be required.

Extra Training FAQs

Can I ride my personal motorcycle?

No - Students who are enrolled in either Novice or Traffic Skills courses who are undergoing Extra Training for skills development are required to use a VISC training motorcycle.

Does everyone need these sessions?

No. Although our courses offer students the most amount of riding time of any other rider training school in BC, VISC understands that everyone learns at a different rate and that some may require a bit more time. The option is there so that students needing to work on their skills will be able to supplement their current course training and be able to continue with their class/course.

Why do I have to pay for Extra Training sessions?

The fee associated with Extra Training is to cover the additional costs of having an instructor, use of VISC motorcycle and private tarmac training area. VISC does not make a profit from Extra Training sessions.

What if I can’t afford to take Extra Training?

If Extra Training is required by our instructors, then the student must undergo Extra Training to bring their skill levels up to meet our course standards in order to continue with their course. Failure to do so will result in the student not being able to continue. If the option is available, multiple students can share an Extra Training session with up to two other students and split the cost.

Every effort will be made to work with students to ensure they can be successful in their course requirements.
